So I can’t believe it’s only been 18 months since I did the NHJ Style Personal Styling course!!!
I’ve always dreamt of being a stylist, so when I had some money through from a PPI claim a few years ago, I started to look into the best courses around. I did lots of research and finally enrolled on the NHJ Style Womenswear Flagship Course in March 2018. Those 4 days on the course are still one of the best weeks of my life & I wrote a blog all about, which if you have not read yet, you can read all about it here.
Anyway…it’s all very well doing a personal styling course but what happens after????
How do you know that you’re going to get the support that you’re promised or the work experience to help you learn and further your skills???
So I just thought I’d do a blog post update on some of the amazing opportunities that have come my way via the NHJStyle team and my own connections since I graduated last March.
One of the first things that happened after the course was that we were all mentored by the senior NHJ stylists & accompanied on client wardrobe detoxes and styling jobs, which was brilliant hands on experience. My first assignment was to work with the fabulous Anna Griffiths where we took a 42 year old male client shopping for 3 hours in Selfridges. Anna showed me how to book a styling suite, pre shop so that the client had looks ready to try on as soon as he arrived whilst we tweaked the looks throughout his session. It was great to chat to my first real live client and see the process happen, whilst also being able to chip in styling ideas and offer styling advice of my own.
One of the best hands on work experience I was given was to work alongside both Anna & the fabulous Helen in Ely’s department store in Wimbledon. Here we had 4-5 clients a day and I was able watch & assist how the stylist managed each appointment from the consultation through to the final looks created.
An opening then became available a few months later and I was delighted to join the NHJ Style team and now work on a freelance basis at the the Elys Department store once a week. We tend to have appointments pre scheduled and I can style up to 5 or 6 clients a day, every client is unique….all ages, shapes & sizes and the appointment can be anything from a quick style update to a mother of a bride!
If you follow me on my Instagram you will see me on a regular basis taking selfies in the mirror when working at Elys! 😉
As part of the NHJ Style team I’ve worked at a number of events including the Ely’s Christmas & Summer events. I love these events as we get to work with so many clients in one day. We also all get to work together which is always so much fun to catch up with all the team as well as the amazing atmosphere that’s created in store with live catwalks fashion shows & DJs …. plus we usually go for a cheeky vino after too!!
Last September the whole class of March 2018 were reunited for big corporate event at the Sky Bar in the Millbank Tower. There was a presentation to 200 ladies by Nicky with 12 stylists modelling & then giving one to one consultations. Such a fabulous event to be part of!!
I was also offered a really exciting opportunity of assisting Helen on the Autumn 2018 shoot for The Time & Leisure Magazine last summer. Magazine styling is very different to personal and I learnt so much watching & assisting Helen at work.
This summer, the NHJ Style team have been offering free personal styling consultations from the Personal Styling Lounge at the O2 Outlet as part of their Summer of Style, every Saturday and Sunday between 13th July – 11th August.
Stores throughout ICON Outlet at The O2 have released additional savings for the sunshine season so as well as being styled for free by one of the NHJ Style team, you can also pick up some absolute bargains just like some of the lovely clients we styled last weekend did.
I am incredibly grateful for the NHJ Styling opportunities that have come my way in the past 18 months, not to mention the friendships. I am very lucky to work with the team and count both Nicky & Claire and the rest of the team as not only work colleagues but also good friends.
I don’t just work with the NHJ Style team, I also have my own personal styling clients. I offer wardrobe detoxes & personal shopping trips for both men & women, e-styling & style work shops & parties. These clients hear about me via word of mouth, my social media & my blog here.
I have also been incredibly lucky to be able to work with a number of brands via my Instagram where I put looks and styling ideas together such as the recent collaboration with Baukjen, South Of The River & Primrose Park to name a few. I have also attended fashion shows (& even been in) along with being invited to private views of new season collections which is great for keeping up with key trends and new & up coming brands.
I have also worked & styled for the top London bridal boutique owner & designer Russell Blackburn at Blackburn Bridal as a wedding stylist. Working with brides is so wonderful however there is a lot of pressure to find each bride the perfect dress for their special day. Russell has taught me so much including pinning & alterations as well as selling higher end couture dresses which can sell for £5,000 plus!!
I’m so lucky to be able to now say that I have my dream job as a stylist, however I would not be where I am today, had I not done the NHJ Style Academy Flagship Course or all the work experience & knowledge I have gained working with the NHJ Style team over the past 18 months.
If you’re thinking about becoming a stylist, then I truly can’t recommend the NHJ Style Academy enough. As always if you have any questions about either course then please don’t hesitate to get in touch below or take advantage of my exclusive offer for all my lovely followers.
If you’re interested in the NHJ Style Academy Flagship Womenswear Course, next one is the 1-4 October in central London, quote “Alice” for £150 off!!
